VELA's 700-Person Cambodia Factory: Scaling Production While Keeping Craftsmanship

Growth in the fashion industry often comes at a cost. When a manufacturer expands from 100 workers to 700, the "craft" of the product is frequently diluted by the "process" of mass production. VELA has taken a different path. Our 700-person Cambodia facility was built to scale the volume our clients need while protecting the exacting technical standards developed by our Dongguan artisans. Here is how we maintain that balance at a headcount of seven hundred.

Training as a foundation, not an afterthought. Every one of our 700 Cambodia operators completes a mandatory four-week VELA Induction Program before joining a production cell. This is not generic sewing training; it is a curriculum designed by our Dongguan technical leads that focuses on the specific construction methods — the "VELA way" — that define our product quality. Operators are trained on leather handling, seam tensioning, and hardware alignment to a level of detail that is rare in the region. We do not hire for speed alone; we hire for the ability to learn precision.

The "Expert per Cell" model. Our production floor is organized into specialized cells, and each cell is supervised by a senior technician. These supervisors are often individuals who spent years in our Dongguan sample room and were transferred to Cambodia to serve as the guardians of quality. By embedding an expert in every cell, we ensure that technical questions are answered instantly on the floor, and that "minor" deviations in stitching or painting are caught before they affect a single batch. Craftsmanship is maintained through human proximity to the work.

Synchronized machinery and tooling. Precision at scale requires more than hands; it requires the right machines. Our Cambodia factory is equipped with the same Japanese programmable sewing units and Italian skiving machines as our China facility. This hardware parity is critical. It means that a technical pack developed in Dongguan can be executed in Cambodia with zero loss in translation. When the machine settings are identical across both sites, the physical output is identical. We have invested heavily to ensure that "Made in Cambodia" carries the same technical weight as "Made in China."

Social compliance and worker well-being. Craftsmanship requires focus, and focus requires a supportive environment. VELA's Cambodia facility is committed to high standards of social compliance: we provide competitive wages, safe working conditions, and professional development paths for our 700 artisans. A stable, respected workforce has lower turnover, which in turn leads to higher institutional knowledge and better product consistency. We believe that a bag made by a respected worker is a better-quality bag. Our compliance certifications — available for review by any prospective client — are a testament to this philosophy.

The result: 1.8 million bags per year with artisan heart. Today, our Cambodia team handles the majority of our volume production, shipping to premium retailers worldwide. We invite brands to visit the facility, talk to our supervisors, and watch the lines in motion. You will see a factory that is large in scale but small in its obsession with detail. Scaling production while keeping craftsmanship is not a contradiction at VELA; it is our core operational capability.
